Jim has many years of experience working in the child welfare system, primarily with familial sexual abuse and familial trauma. He has worked within the Department of Family and Protective services in various roles, and most recently with Harris County as a Forensic Interviewer at the Children’s Assessment Center.
Jim’s therapeutic approach is extremely client centered. He wants the client to be the focus and catering each session to the individual is very important to him. Jim believes that the client is the expert on their own life and circumstances and that his role is to assist and guide, not direct. He has experience in working with adolescents and adults, and he enjoys working with couples as well. As a member of the LGBTQ community himself and through previous work as a therapist at the Montrose Center, Jim has extensive experience in working with the gay, lesbian, and transgender communities and their families, as well as those that are exploring these areas of their own lives. He is also experienced at working with clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, trauma, sex and intimacy, victims of trafficking and sexual abuse and assault. Jim strives to create a safe space in which the client feels heard and comfortable speaking about any struggles they may be experiencing. He is trained and experienced in using evidence-based treatments, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and mindfulness techniques.
Jim holds Bachelor’s degrees in Mass Communications and Criminal Justice, as well as a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC-Associate #85694) under the supervision of Ginger Brasher, LPC-S (LPC #73003) as well as a National Certified Counselor.
